Breast Cancer

Although the cause of breast cancer has not been fully determined, early detection can clearly determine and impact the outcome of subsequent treatments.

The Breast Self-Exam is an excellent and recommended method of early detection along with regular physical examinations by your Physician.

One week after your period ends (or the first of each month if you have irregular cycles), check your breasts while in the shower.

1. Fingers slide more easily over wet, soapy skin, which may make changes ealier to feel. Put your right arm behind your head. With your left hand, check for lumps or thickening.

2. Press firmly with pads of fingers. Move left hand over right breast in one of three methods: in an expanding circular rotation around the nipple, in an up and down direction, or an inward and outward direction toward the nipple. Use the same method each month. Check the entire breast and underarm area.

3. Now put the left arm behind the head and repeat the steps above with the right hand on the left breast.

4. Look in a mirror for changes in shape, size, or skin texture of breasts. Check nipples for a discharge other than breast milk.

If you feel or detect anything out of the ordinary or are unsure of your self-exam, contact your SAMA physician for an appointment to have a further examination.
